where 100 miles is a long way

In Europe 100 miles is a long way, but in America 100 years is a long time.

I am struck by how old and how established buildings are here in the Netherlands. For example, the apartment where I’m staying tonight is older than my country! It’s nice to walk through cities with history, past the sqaure where young Rembrandt played, the house where Anne Frank hid, and the church where the Pilgrims worshipped before setting sail on the Mayflower. It seems each building has its own story, each canal its own secrets. Some of these buildings are not only centuries old, but took centuries to build. I can’t even imagine! What a contrast between some insta-construction here in the States. I drive past buildings that are only twenty years old and are complete dumps! Architecture is truly a craft.
